Chip or Contactless Not Working on a New Card?
New card's chip or tap-to-pay not working? Here are the common reasons the chip or contactless fails and how to fix each one.
On this page
You insert your new card's chip and the terminal beeps an error, or you tap to pay and nothing happens. A chip or contactless feature that won't work on a brand-new card is annoying, but it's usually fixable in seconds, and it rarely means the card is faulty. Most of the time it comes down to activation, a dirty or damaged chip, a terminal quirk, or a digital-wallet setting. Here's how to diagnose and fix both chip and contactless problems.
Start here: is the card actually activated?
The single most common reason a new card's chip or tap won't work is that activation hasn't fully completed. An unactivated card will fail at the terminal even if everything else is fine.
Fix: Confirm you received an activation confirmation. If in doubt, activate again via the app or the number on the back of the card. Our guide on activating a new credit card covers every method.
Chip not working
1. The chip is dirty or smudged
The gold chip contacts need to make a clean connection. Fingerprints, dust or residue can block it.
Fix: Gently wipe the chip with a soft, dry cloth (or a slightly damp one, then dry it). Avoid anything abrasive.
2. Insertion technique or timing
Removing the card too early, or not inserting it fully, causes read errors.
Fix: Insert the chip end fully and leave the card in until the terminal tells you to remove it. Try once more, terminals often read on the second attempt.
3. A worn or damaged chip
Rare on a new card, but a manufacturing flaw or a bend can damage the chip.
Fix: If multiple terminals reject the chip, ask the cashier to swipe the magnetic stripe as a one-time workaround, then request a replacement card from your issuer.
4. The specific terminal is faulty
Sometimes it's not your card at all, it's that reader.
Fix: Try the same card at a different store. If it works elsewhere, the original terminal was the problem.
Contactless (tap-to-pay) not working
1. Contactless isn't enabled yet
On some cards, the contactless function activates only after the first successful chip transaction, a built-in security step.
Fix: Make one chip-insert purchase first. After that, tap-to-pay typically works.
2. You're tapping in the wrong spot or too fast
The contactless antenna needs to be close to the reader's symbol for a moment.
Fix: Hold the card flat against the contactless symbol for one to two seconds, not a quick wave. Remove any thick wallet or metal case that can block the signal.
3. The merchant doesn't accept contactless
Not every terminal supports tap, and some have it switched off.
Fix: Look for the contactless wave symbol. If it's absent, use the chip instead.
4. Digital wallet setup is incomplete
If you're tapping with a phone or watch, an unfinished wallet setup will fail.
Fix: Re-add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay and complete any verification (often an OTP or app confirmation).
Quick reference
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Chip read error | Dirty chip / removed early | Clean chip, insert fully, retry |
| Chip fails everywhere | Damaged chip | Swipe once, request replacement |
| Tap does nothing | Contactless not yet enabled | Make one chip purchase first |
| Tap inconsistent | Wrong position / metal case | Hold flat on symbol, remove case |
| Phone tap fails | Wallet setup incomplete | Re-add card to digital wallet |
When to request a replacement
If the chip fails across several different terminals, or contactless never works after a successful chip purchase and digital-wallet setup, the card hardware may be defective. Call the number on the back of the card and ask for a replacement, it's free and usually arrives within a few business days. In the meantime, you can often add the card to a digital wallet and pay by phone, or swipe the stripe.
Prevent future problems
- Activate fully before your first purchase.
- Make your first transaction a chip insert to enable contactless.
- Keep the chip clean and avoid bending the card.
- Store the card properly, repeated friction and magnets can wear it out.
- Add it to a digital wallet as a reliable backup payment method.
A chip or contactless glitch on a new card is almost always minor. Clean the chip, insert it fully, make that first chip purchase to switch on tap-to-pay, and if the hardware truly is faulty, a quick call gets you a free replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't the chip on my new card working?
Usually the card isn't fully activated, the chip needs cleaning, or it wasn't inserted fully and left in long enough. Clean the chip with a soft cloth, insert it completely, and try again. If it fails at several stores, request a replacement.
Why won't my new card tap to pay?
Many cards enable contactless only after the first successful chip purchase, so make one chip transaction first. Also hold the card flat on the contactless symbol for a second or two, and remove any metal case that blocks the signal.
Can I still use my card if the chip is broken?
Yes, temporarily. Ask the cashier to swipe the magnetic stripe, or add the card to a digital wallet and pay by phone. Then request a free replacement from your issuer.
