How to choose: Balance Transfer Credit Cards

A balance transfer card has one job: stop the interest long enough for you to pay the debt off. We rank these cards on the total cost of clearing a typical balance — the length of the 0% period, the transfer fee, the rate it reverts to and whether the card also gives 0% on purchases — not on rewards, which are irrelevant here.

Length versus fee

The longest offer is not always the cheapest. A 21-month card with a 5% fee costs $250 on $5,000; an 18-month card at 3% costs $150. If you can clear the balance in 18 months, the shorter card wins by $100. Divide your balance by the months you realistically need and pick the lowest fee among cards that cover it.

The deadlines that matter

  • Transfers usually must be requested within 60–120 days of opening to get the promotional rate.
  • You cannot transfer between cards from the same issuer.
  • Missing a payment can end the 0% period immediately.
  • The balance left when the period ends reverts to 20%–30% — set an automatic payment that clears it in time.

Market by market

The US leads on no-fee cards with 15–21 month offers; the UK on sheer length (up to about 29 months, with 2%–4% fees); Australia on long 0% deals with occasional no-fee promotions from NAB and Westpac; Canada on low-rate (1.99%) rather than 0% transfers. Use the market filter above.

Frequently asked questions

What is the longest 0% balance transfer card?

In the US, offers run up to 21 months (Wells Fargo Reflect, Citi Simplicity). In the UK, Barclaycard, HSBC and MBNA reach about 29 months. In Australia, NAB, Westpac and Citi offer up to around 28 months. The ranking shows the current leaders.

Is a balance transfer fee worth paying?

Almost always, if the alternative is 20%+ interest. A 3% fee on $5,000 is $150; the interest saved over 18 months is roughly $1,400.

Does a balance transfer hurt my credit score?

A new application causes a small, temporary dip. Paying the balance down afterwards lowers utilisation and usually raises the score within a few months.
