Why the Axis Bank Magnus Credit Card ranks where it does
Magnus rewards very large monthly spending better than any other card here, and punishes moderate spending with a high fee. It earns 12 EDGE REWARD points per ₹200 on the first ₹1.5 lakh each calendar month, then 35 points per ₹200 above that, up to a ceiling of your credit limit plus ₹1.5 lakh. The ₹12,500 fee (plus taxes) is waived only on ₹25 lakh of spend in the previous year.
Below ₹1.5 lakh a month the card is ordinary. Valuing points at ₹0.20, the figure Axis uses for EDGE REWARD points on its Privilege card, 12 points per ₹200 returns 1.2%, and you need about ₹10.4 lakh a year just to earn back the fee. Above ₹1.5 lakh the 35-point rate returns 3.5% at the same valuation, and more if you transfer to airline or hotel partners, which Axis caps at 5 lakh points a year across two partner groups.
A long exclusion list also applies: utilities and telecom, rent, wallets, government payments, insurance, gold and jewellery, and fuel earn nothing and do not count towards the waiver. Magnus fits people who route ₹2 lakh or more a month of genuine retail spending through one card.
Good fit if
- People spending ₹2 lakh or more a month on eligible retail purchases
- Points collectors who transfer to airline and hotel partners
- High-limit cardholders who can use the full 35-point band
Skip it if
- Anyone spending under about ₹87,000 a month, where the fee outweighs the points
- People whose spending is mostly rent, utilities, insurance or fuel
Assume ₹2 lakh of eligible spend every month, ₹24 lakh a year, and a credit limit above ₹50,000. The first ₹1.5 lakh earns 1,50,000 ÷ 200 × 12 = 9,000 points; the next ₹50,000 earns 50,000 ÷ 200 × 35 = 8,750. That is 17,750 points a month, 2,13,000 a year. At ₹0.20 a point, our conservative figure taken from Axis's own voucher valuation, that is ₹42,600. Annual spend is just under ₹25 lakh, so the ₹12,500 fee plus taxes applies, leaving about ₹30,100 before tax.
How it stacks up
The HDFC Infinia pays a flat 5 points per ₹150 with a ₹1 SmartBuy value and waives its fee at ₹10 lakh, which is friendlier to people who spend under ₹1.5 lakh a month. The Axis Atlas is the cheaper Axis option at ₹5,000, earning EDGE Miles with a stronger rate on direct airline and hotel bookings. Magnus only pulls ahead of both at high monthly volumes.
