Our verdict

Why the HDFC Millennia Credit Card ranks where it does

Millennia is a solid everyday cashback card for people who shop on the big consumer apps, held back by tight monthly caps. It pays 5% on ten merchants, Amazon, BookMyShow, Cult.fit, Flipkart, Myntra, Sony LIV, Swiggy, Tata CLiQ, Uber and Zomato, and 1% on most other spends, both as points worth ₹1 each against the statement.

The caps are what to plan around. Each rate is limited to 1,000 points per calendar month, so the 5% tier stops paying after ₹20,000 of spend on those merchants and the 1% tier after ₹1 lakh elsewhere. Statement-credit redemptions are themselves capped at 3,000 points a month and need a 500-point minimum, which rarely matters at this level. Fuel, EMI, wallet loads, rent and government payments earn nothing.

The fee is ₹1,000 plus taxes, waived on ₹1 lakh of annual spend, and a ₹1,000 gift voucher arrives for each calendar quarter with ₹1 lakh of spend. That quarterly voucher is worth as much as the fee, so a user spending ₹4 lakh a year gets ₹4,000 in vouchers on top of cashback. Keep a different card for bills and fuel, which earn nothing or little here.

Good fit if

  • Heavy users of Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, Myntra and Uber
  • People spending about ₹1 lakh a quarter who can collect the vouchers
  • Anyone wanting cashback redeemable at ₹1 a point

Skip it if

  • Spenders far above ₹20,000 a month on the 5% merchants, where the cap bites
  • People who pay mostly rent, fuel or government bills
Worked example

Assume ₹15,000 a month on the ten 5% merchants and ₹20,000 on other eligible spends. The first earns 750 points and the second 200, 950 points a month, inside both 1,000-point caps. Over a year that is 11,400 points, worth ₹11,400 as statement credit at HDFC's ₹1 rate, which is the floor value rather than an inflated one. Quarterly spend of ₹1.05 lakh earns four ₹1,000 vouchers, and ₹4.2 lakh a year waives the ₹1,000 fee: about ₹15,400 in total.

How it stacks up

The Swiggy HDFC Bank card pays 10% on Swiggy and 5% on a wide list of online categories for half the fee, with caps set per billing cycle rather than per calendar month. The Axis ACE is better for bill payers, with 5% on Google Pay utility payments and 1.5% on everything else. Millennia stays the stronger pick for spread-out app spending plus quarterly vouchers.
