Why the Amazon Pay ICICI Bank Credit Card ranks where it does
The Amazon Pay ICICI card is the easiest recommendation in this list for anyone with a Prime membership: no joining or annual fee, 5% back on Amazon.in, and nothing to track. Non-Prime members get 3% on Amazon, partner merchants on Amazon Pay earn 2%, and everything else earns 1%, with the rewards landing in the Amazon ecosystem.
The trade-off is where the value can be spent. Rewards are useful only if you already buy on Amazon, and at 1% the non-Amazon rate is ordinary. The figure that changes the picture is abroad: ICICI now lists a 1.99% markup on foreign currency spends, well below the 3.5% common on Indian cashback cards, which makes it a usable backup for travel and overseas websites.
There is no fee to recover, so there is no break-even: the card is worth holding from the first rupee. The real question is whether Prime pays for itself, and the 2-point gap between Prime and non-Prime earning can offset part of the membership for regular Amazon buyers. Pair it with a card that covers bills or dining, since this one earns only 1% there.
Good fit if
- Prime members who place several Amazon orders a month
- Anyone wanting a no-fee card that stays useful for years
- Occasional overseas shoppers who want a lower forex markup
Skip it if
- People who rarely use Amazon and want cash they can spend anywhere
- Heavy bill payers, who earn only 1% here
Assume a Prime member spends ₹8,000 a month on Amazon.in, ₹5,000 at Amazon Pay partner merchants and ₹12,000 elsewhere. Amazon earns 5% of ₹96,000 a year, or ₹4,800; partners earn 2% of ₹60,000, or ₹1,200; other spends earn 1% of ₹1,44,000, or ₹1,440. The total is ₹7,440 a year with no fee to subtract. We count each reward rupee at face value only when spent on Amazon, which is the conservative case because there is no higher-value redemption route to inflate it.
How it stacks up
The Flipkart Axis Bank card is the mirror image for Flipkart and Myntra buyers, with higher rates there but quarterly caps and a ₹500 annual fee from year two unless you spend ₹3.5 lakh. The Cashback SBI Card pays 5% on almost any online merchant, not just Amazon, but charges ₹999 a year and caps online cashback at ₹2,000 a statement. Many readers hold one of those alongside this card.
