Why the Mashreq Solitaire Credit Card ranks where it does
Solitaire is a benefits card whose rewards are weaker than they look. Mashreq's key facts sheet puts the fee at AED 1,575 including VAT, with a minimum salary of AED 25,000, and the card earns Mashreq Vantage points: 6 per AED on international spends, 4 on airlines, hotels and travel, 2 on other local spends and 1 on government, utilities, fuel, education, telecom, rent and charity.
The redemption table is what matters. Mashreq converts 380 Vantage points into AED 1 of cashback, so 6 points per AED is about 1.6% back and 2 points about 0.5%. Against that, international transactions carry a 2.89% spread, which means the headline international rate does not even cover the currency cost. Points go further as Skywards Miles, at 22 points per mile, but that only helps people who fly Emirates.
The real reasons to hold it are the extras: 12 lounge visits a year once you have made an international purchase, two weekend golf games and two valet parkings per billing cycle after AED 10,000 of spend, Fitness First access on the same condition, and 50% off eight cinema tickets a month. People who use those every month can justify the fee; people looking for points should look elsewhere.
Good fit if
- Residents earning AED 25,000 or more who golf and use valet parking
- People who spend AED 10,000 a month on the card to unlock the extras
- Emirates flyers who convert points to Skywards Miles
Skip it if
- Anyone choosing a card mainly for cashback value
- Heavy international spenders, since the 2.89% spread exceeds the earn rate
Assume AED 15,000 of local spend, AED 2,000 on travel and AED 3,000 abroad each month. That earns 30,000 + 8,000 + 18,000 = 56,000 Vantage points, or 672,000 a year. At Mashreq's cashback rate of 380 points per AED, which we use as the conservative value, that is about AED 1,768 against the AED 1,575 fee. The AED 36,000 spent abroad in the year also incurs the 2.89% spread, about AED 1,040, so the net result is negative unless you use the lounges, golf and valet.
How it stacks up
The ADCB TouchPoints Infinite costs AED 1,050 and gives unlimited lounge access for you and a guest, but ADCB does not publish a clear point value. The Liv Cashback+ suits people who want value from spending itself: up to 4% on all spend above AED 15,000 a month, with a 1.99% currency fee, for AED 735. Solitaire is the pick only when its golf and valet benefits are used.
