Why the BPCL SBI Card OCTANE ranks where it does
The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE is one of the better fuel cards for people who fill up at BPCL. It earns 25 Reward Points per ₹100 on BPCL fuel, lubricants and Bharatgas, worth 6.25% at SBI's valuation, and with the 1% surcharge waiver the total is 7.25%. Dining, departmental stores, groceries and movies earn 10 points per ₹100, or 2.5%.
The caps set the ceiling. Fuel points stop at 2,500 a billing cycle, which is reached at ₹10,000 of BPCL spend, and the surcharge waiver covers transactions up to ₹4,000 and ₹100 a cycle. A family spending ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 a month on fuel gets the full rate; heavier drivers lose some of it.
The fee is ₹1,499 plus taxes. SBI returns 6,000 bonus points worth ₹1,500 when it is paid, and reverses the renewal fee on ₹2 lakh of annual spend. A ₹2,000 e-gift voucher on ₹3 lakh of spend and four domestic lounge visits a year round it out. The main limit is geography: the fuel benefits apply only at BPCL outlets, so check that one is on your usual route before applying.
Good fit if
- Drivers who refuel mainly at BPCL outlets
- Households spending ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 a month on fuel
- People who also spend on dining and groceries at the 10-point rate
Skip it if
- Anyone without a BPCL outlet on their regular route
- People spending well above ₹10,000 a month on fuel, where the cap bites
Assume ₹8,000 a month at BPCL and ₹10,000 on dining and groceries. Fuel earns 8,000 × 25 ÷ 100 = 2,000 points, inside the 2,500 cap, and dining and groceries 1,000 points. At ₹0.25 a point, the value implied by SBI's own 6,000 points for ₹1,500, that is ₹750 a month, ₹9,000 a year, before the surcharge waiver of up to ₹100 a cycle. Annual spend of ₹2.16 lakh reverses the ₹1,499 renewal fee.
How it stacks up
The IndianOil HDFC Bank card is the IndianOil equivalent at ₹500, waived on ₹50,000 of first-year spend, but its monthly Fuel Point caps are much tighter. For people who do not drive much, the SBI Card PRIME earns the same 10 points per ₹100 on dining and groceries and adds Priority Pass visits. The OCTANE only wins when fuel is a large monthly cost.
The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE gives 7.25% value back on BPCL fuel through 25 Reward Points per ₹100 and a surcharge waiver, plus 10 points per ₹100 on dining, groceries, departmental stores and movies. The ₹1,499 fee is reversed on ₹2 lakh annual spend.
