Our verdict

Why the Scapia Federal Bank Credit Card ranks where it does

The Scapia Federal Bank card is the best free travel card in India for people who will book their trips through the Scapia app. It is lifetime free with zero forex markup, earns 10% as Scapia Coins on eligible Visa spends of ₹20 and above and 20% on travel booked in the app, and 5 coins are worth ₹1 towards Scapia bookings. That is about 2% value on everyday spending and 4% on Scapia travel.

The restriction is where coins can go: only to travel booked on the Scapia app, where they can pay for up to 100% of a booking. If you prefer to book directly with airlines or hotels, the rewards are worth much less to you. Utilities, insurance, rent, fuel, education and wallet loads earn nothing.

Lounge access is generous once unlocked: unlimited domestic visits in any month where combined spend on the Visa card and the complimentary RuPay card reaches ₹20,000. The RuPay card also earns 5% in coins on spends above ₹500, including UPI. With no fees at all, the break-even question disappears; the only question is whether you will book travel through Scapia at least once or twice a year.

Good fit if

  • Travellers willing to book flights and hotels in the Scapia app
  • People who spend in foreign currencies and want zero markup
  • Anyone spending ₹20,000 a month who wants unlimited domestic lounge access

Skip it if

  • People who want cashback they can spend anywhere
  • Travellers who always book directly with airlines and hotels
Worked example

Assume ₹25,000 a month of eligible Visa spend and one ₹30,000 flight booked through Scapia in the year. Everyday spend earns 10% as coins, 2,500 a month or 30,000 a year, and the booking earns 20%, or 6,000 coins. At 5 coins per ₹1, the 36,000 coins are worth ₹7,200 towards Scapia travel. Monthly spend above ₹20,000 also unlocks unlimited domestic lounge access. We value coins only at Scapia's stated rate because they have no cash value outside the app.

How it stacks up

The IDFC FIRST Millennia is also lifetime free with zero forex markup, and its points are not tied to one travel app, but it has no airport lounge access. The Axis Horizon gives international as well as domestic lounge visits without a spend condition and earns transferable EDGE Miles, at a ₹3,000 fee and a 3.5% markup. Scapia wins for anyone happy to book through its app.

The Scapia Federal Bank Credit Card is a lifetime free travel card with zero forex markup. It earns 10% as Scapia Coins on eligible spends and 20% on Scapia app bookings, with 5 coins worth ₹1 towards travel on the app.
