Your first credit card has one job: start a clean credit history without costing you anything. Rewards are nice; a fee, a trap APR or an issuer that does not report to the bureaus are not. Here is the card we would hand a first-timer in each market we rank, and why.

What we looked for

  • No annual fee — a first card should cost nothing to keep for a decade.
  • Approval for a thin file — student, secured, deposit-backed or bank-data underwriting.
  • Reporting to every bureau — otherwise the card builds nothing.
  • A graduation path — automatic limit reviews or product changes to a better card.

The three habits that matter more than the card

  1. Autopay the full statement balance. Interest is the only real cost of a first card, and a missed payment is the only real damage.
  2. Keep the reported balance under 10% of the limit. On a $500 limit, that is $50 when the statement closes. Pay early if needed.
  3. Do not apply for anything else for six months. Let the account age; then read the no-credit-history ranking for your second card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best first credit card in the US?

For students, Discover it Student Cash Back; for everyone else, Discover it Secured — both free, both pay cash back and both graduate you to a standard card within a year.

Can I get a first credit card with no income?

Students can usually count allowances or part-time income; otherwise a secured card (deposit-backed) or a card secured against a fixed deposit (India) approves without income history.

What limit will my first card have?

Typically $200–$1,000 (or the equivalent). It grows after three to six months of on-time payments. Keep reported balances low — the limit matters less than utilisation.
