The best cashback credit card in India depends on your biggest spend. For online shopping, the Cashback SBI Card pays 5% online up to ₹2,000 a statement; for bills, Axis ACE pays 5% via Google Pay; for food and groceries, HSBC Live+ pays 10% up to ₹1,200 a month. Amazon Pay ICICI is the best no-fee pick. Headline rates mislead, because every card caps or excludes something. We rank them below on a realistic ₹40,000 monthly budget, as of September 2026.
How we ranked cashback cards
A 10% card with a small cap can pay less than a 1.5% card with none. So we looked at four things: the rate on each spending category, the monthly or per-cycle cap, the categories excluded from cashback, and the annual fee after 18% GST, set against the spend needed to waive it. Then we ran the numbers on one household budget, shown in the worked example.
Best cashback credit cards in India: comparison

| HSBC Live+ | ₹999, waived on ₹2 lakh | 10% on dining, food delivery and groceries (up to ₹1,200 a month), 1.5% on most other spends | Food and grocery-heavy households |
| Axis ACE | ₹499 + GST, waived on ₹2 lakh | 5% on bills via Google Pay, 4% on Swiggy, Zomato and Ola (₹500 combined cap), 1.5% uncapped | Bills plus a flat rate on the rest |

Best cashback card for online spending
The Cashback SBI Card pays 5% on nearly any online merchant, credited automatically within two working days of your statement, with no expiry. From 1 April 2026 SBI Card capped online cashback at ₹2,000 per statement cycle and offline cashback at ₹2,000, with a combined ceiling of ₹4,000. The 5% therefore covers ₹40,000 of online spending a cycle. Exclusions include utilities, insurance, fuel, rent, wallets, education, jewellery, railways and merchant EMIs, and from April 2026 also gaming, tolls and government payments. For online shopping by platform, read our guide to the best credit card for online shopping.
Best cashback card for bills and everyday spending
Axis ACE pays 5% on electricity, water, gas, broadband, DTH and mobile bills paid through Google Pay, and 4% on Swiggy, Zomato and Ola. These two categories share a ₹500 cap per statement, which is reached at ₹10,000 of spend at 5%. Everything else earns 1.5% with no cap, among the highest flat rates in India. Two cautions: since April 2024, bills paid anywhere other than Google Pay earn nothing, and fuel, rent, insurance, education, wallets and EMIs are excluded. The Airtel Axis card is worth adding only if Airtel bills are large, since its 25% rate is capped at twice the 1% base cashback you earn that month after the April 2026 revision.
Best cashback card for food, groceries and delivery
HSBC's Live+ card pays 10% on dining, food delivery and groceries, up to ₹1,200 a month according to HSBC's Live+ page, and 1.5% on most other spends. Its ₹999 fee is waived on ₹2 lakh, it includes a small lounge allowance, and its 1.99% forex markup is low for a cashback card. The limitations: HSBC offers it only in select cities and asks for ₹6 lakh of annual salaried income. The Swiggy HDFC card is the alternative for delivery-heavy users, at 10% on Swiggy, Instamart, Dineout and Genie up to ₹1,500 a cycle.
Best lifetime free cashback card
Amazon Pay ICICI has no joining or annual fee, pays 5% on Amazon for Prime members, 2% at Amazon Pay partners and 1% elsewhere, and charges 1.99% forex from October 2025. ICICI currently lists it as invite-only, with a ₹30,000 monthly income requirement. For other free options, see our ranking of lifetime free credit cards in India.
If you are salaried and use a few big apps, HDFC Millennia pays 5% at Amazon, BookMyShow, Cult.fit, Flipkart, Myntra, Sony LIV, Swiggy, Tata CLiQ, Uber and Zomato and 1% elsewhere, for ₹1,000 plus GST, waived on ₹1 lakh. Redemption against your statement is capped at 3,000 cashback points a month, and HDFC lists a salaried income requirement of over ₹35,000 a month.
Worked example: which card pays most on ₹40,000 a month?
Assume a monthly budget of ₹10,000 online shopping, ₹5,000 in bills paid via Google Pay, ₹4,000 food delivery, ₹6,000 groceries in stores and ₹15,000 other in-store spending. Annual spend is ₹4.8 lakh, so each card's renewal fee is waived and we compare cashback only. We assume bills earn nothing where a card excludes utilities.
- HSBC Live+: 10% on ₹10,000 of food delivery and groceries = ₹1,000 (under the ₹1,200 cap), plus 1.5% on ₹25,000 of online and other spending = ₹375. Total ₹1,375 a month, about ₹16,500 a year.
- Cashback SBI Card: 5% on ₹14,000 online including delivery = ₹700, plus 1% on ₹21,000 offline = ₹210. Total ₹910 a month, about ₹10,920 a year.
- Axis ACE: 5% on ₹5,000 bills = ₹250 and 4% on ₹4,000 delivery = ₹160 (₹410, under the ₹500 cap), plus 1.5% on ₹31,000 = ₹465. Total ₹875 a month, about ₹10,500 a year.
- Amazon Pay ICICI (assuming ₹6,000 of the online spend is on Amazon with Prime): 5% of ₹6,000 = ₹300, plus 1% on ₹29,000 of other eligible spending = ₹290. Total ₹590 a month, about ₹7,080 a year, with no fee in any year.
On this budget, HSBC Live+ leads if you live in a city where it is offered. Cashback SBI and Axis ACE are close; pairing ACE for bills with Cashback SBI for online shopping adds about ₹250 a month over Cashback SBI alone. Shift the budget toward online shopping and Cashback SBI pulls ahead; shift it toward bills and ACE does.
Is cashback better than reward points?
For most people, yes, because cashback has a fixed value and points do not. The same point can be worth very different amounts depending on how you redeem it. On the IndianOil HDFC card, a fuel point is worth ₹0.96 as fuel at IndianOil but ₹0.20 as cashback. On HDFC Regalia Gold, a point redeemed as cashback has been worth 15 paise since November 2025, far less than through SmartBuy travel. On SBI Card's BPCL cards, 4 points equal ₹1. Points cards can beat cashback if you redeem carefully for travel; if you would rather not track redemption values, a cashback card is the better choice.
Should you hold two cashback cards?
Two cards can raise your return, but splitting spend can cost you fee waivers. Take the ₹4.8 lakh annual budget from the example. On Cashback SBI alone, you clear its ₹2 lakh waiver easily. Split it evenly with Axis ACE and each card gets ₹2.4 lakh, still above both ₹2 lakh waivers. Add a third card with a ₹3.5 lakh waiver, such as Flipkart Axis, and a one-third share of ₹1.6 lakh will not reach it, so its ₹590 fee comes back. A simple rule: pair a free card, such as Amazon Pay ICICI, with one paid card, and give the paid card enough spend to clear its waiver.
Cashback traps: caps, exclusions and EMI
- Rent and wallets. Almost no cashback card rewards them, and HDFC charges 1% on rent payments while SBI Card charges ₹199 plus GST per rent transaction.
- EMI conversions. Merchant EMIs are excluded on Cashback SBI and Axis ACE, and HDFC Millennia earns nothing on Easy EMI.
- Fuel. Cashback cards exclude fuel; a co-branded card from our fuel credit card guide does better.
- Interest. At around 3.75% a month on most cards, one month of revolving a ₹30,000 balance costs ₹1,125, more than a month of cashback on any card here.
How to pick your cashback card
- Sort three months of statements into categories: online, bills, food and groceries, and everything else.
- Find your largest category and shortlist the card that pays most on it.
- Check the cap against your spend in that category.
- Check the exclusions against your regular bills.
- Confirm you will clear the fee waiver, or subtract the fee with GST.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best cashback credit card in India?
It depends on where you spend. As of September 2026, the Cashback SBI Card is best for online shopping (5%, up to ₹2,000 a cycle), Axis ACE for bills paid through Google Pay (5%) with 1.5% on everything else, and HSBC Live+ for food and groceries (10%, up to ₹1,200 a month) in cities where HSBC offers it.
Is the Cashback SBI Card still worth it after the 2026 cap?
For most people, yes. From 1 April 2026 its 5% online cashback is capped at ₹2,000 per statement cycle, which still covers ₹40,000 of online spending. The ₹999 plus GST fee is waived on ₹2 lakh of annual spend. It suits people who shop across many websites rather than on one platform.
Axis ACE or Cashback SBI: which is better?
Axis ACE is better if you pay large bills through Google Pay and spend a lot offline, thanks to its uncapped 1.5% base rate. Cashback SBI is better if most of your spending is online, at 5% up to ₹2,000 a cycle. In our ₹40,000 monthly example they returned about ₹10,500 and ₹10,920 a year respectively.
Do cashback cards give cashback on rent and fuel?
Generally no. Cashback SBI, Axis ACE and the Flipkart cards all exclude rent and fuel, and most also exclude wallets, insurance, education and EMI transactions. Some banks add fees instead: HDFC charges 1% on rent and SBI Card ₹199 plus GST per rent payment. For fuel, a co-branded fuel card pays far more.
How is cashback credited on Indian credit cards?
It varies. The Cashback SBI Card credits cashback within two working days of your statement, and it does not expire. The Swiggy HDFC card has paid cashback as a statement credit since June 2024. Amazon Pay ICICI rewards are credited as points you use on Amazon. Check your card terms for timing and any redemption caps.
