The best fuel credit card depends on which pump brand you use. For BPCL, the BPCL SBI Card OCTANE returns 7.25% for ₹1,499 a year; for HPCL, ICICI's HPCL Super Saver returns 5% for ₹500; for IndianOil, the IndianOil HDFC card returns 5% as fuel points. Each caps its rewards, so check your monthly fuel bill against the cap. A general card with a 1% surcharge waiver is enough if you spend less than about ₹2,000 a month on fuel. Figures are as of September 2026.
Which is the best fuel credit card in India?
Fuel cards are co-branded with one oil company, and their high rates apply only at that company's pumps. Pick the brand you pass most often, then compare the monthly cap with what you actually spend.
| Card | Annual fee | Key benefit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPCL SBI Card OCTANE | ₹1,499 + GST, waived on ₹2 lakh spend | 7.25% value back at BPCL on up to ₹10,000 of fuel a month | Heavy BPCL users |
| BPCL SBI Card | ₹499 + GST, waived on ₹1 lakh spend (from May 2026) | 4.25% value back at BPCL on up to ₹10,000 a month | Moderate BPCL users |
| HPCL Super Saver ICICI | ₹500 + GST, waived on ₹1.5 lakh spend | 4% cashback (up to ₹200 a month) plus 1% surcharge waiver; extra 1.5% via the HP Pay app | HPCL users spending up to ₹5,000 a month |
| IDFC FIRST Power+ | Waived on ₹1.5 lakh spend; confirm the fee with IDFC FIRST | Up to 5% at HPCL (6.5% via HP Pay), capped at 2,400 points (₹600) a month | HPCL users spending more |
| IndianOil HDFC Bank | ₹500 + GST, waived on ₹50,000 spend | 5% as fuel points at IndianOil, capped at 250 points a month for 6 months, then 150 | IndianOil users |
Best credit card for BPCL petrol pumps
SBI Card offers two BPCL cards, and the difference is simple arithmetic.
The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE earns 25 reward points per ₹100 at BPCL pumps, capped at 2,500 points per statement cycle, plus a 1% surcharge waiver on transactions up to ₹4,000 (maximum ₹100). At 4 points to ₹1, that is 6.25% in points plus 1% waiver, or 7.25%, on up to ₹10,000 of fuel a month. It also gives 10X points on groceries, departmental stores, movies and dining (capped at 7,500 points a month) and 25X on Bharat Gas bookings made on the website or app. From January 2026 it is included in SBI Card's domestic lounge programme at a limited list of lounges.
The BPCL SBI Card earns 13 points per ₹100 at BPCL, capped at 1,300 points per cycle, plus the same 1% waiver, for 4.25%. It costs ₹499, and from 1 May 2026 the renewal fee is waived only if you spend ₹1 lakh a year, up from ₹50,000.
When OCTANE is worth the higher fee: OCTANE earns 12 extra points per ₹100, which is ₹3 per ₹100, or 3% more. The fee gap with GST is ₹1,769 minus ₹589, or ₹1,180 a year. Divide ₹1,180 by 3% and you get ₹39,333 of BPCL fuel a year, about ₹3,300 a month. Above that, OCTANE pays more, even before counting its dining and grocery points.
Best credit card for HPCL
ICICI's HPCL Super Saver gives 4% cashback at HPCL and HP Pay, capped at ₹200 a month, plus a 1% surcharge waiver on transactions of ₹400 to ₹4,000, and an extra 1.5% when you pay through the HP Pay app. Because the cashback cap is ₹200, the 4% stops at ₹5,000 of fuel a month. It also earns 20 points per ₹100 on utilities, groceries and departmental stores, capped at 400 points a month. The ₹500 fee is waived on ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend.
IDFC FIRST Power+ suits higher HPCL spending. Its product guide gives 30X points at HPCL, capped at 2,400 points (₹600) a month, which together with the surcharge waiver comes to 5%, or 6.5% via HP Pay. It also gives 30X on grocery and utility spends up to small monthly caps. The guide is dated 2023 and we could not confirm the current fee on an official page, so check it before applying.
Best credit card for IndianOil
The IndianOil HDFC Bank card earns fuel points worth 5% at IndianOil outlets, capped at 250 points a month for the first six months and 150 points a month after that. It also earns 5% on groceries and bill payments, capped at 100 points a month each, and 1 point per ₹150 elsewhere, including UPI. Points are worth ₹0.96 each when redeemed for fuel at IndianOil (minimum 500 points), but only ₹0.20 as cashback, so redeem them at the pump. The ₹500 fee is waived on ₹50,000 of annual spend, and HDFC lists a salaried income threshold of just ₹12,000 a month.
The cap is tight. At 5 points per ₹100, the 150-point limit is reached at ₹3,000 of fuel a month. Axis Bank also has an IndianOil co-branded card, revised in June 2025; we could not confirm its current fuel value back on an official Axis page.
Other rewards on fuel cards
Fuel cards also pay on everyday categories, which can matter as much as the fuel rate. The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE gives 10X points on groceries, departmental stores, movies and dining, capped at 7,500 points a month, though Metro Cash & Carry and Walmart are excluded. The basic BPCL SBI Card gives 5X on the same categories, capped at 5,000 points a month, plus a 2,000-point welcome bonus worth ₹500. ICICI's HPCL Super Saver gives 20 points per ₹100 on utilities, groceries and departmental stores, capped at 400 points a month. If most of your spending happens elsewhere, pair a fuel card with a cashback card.
What is a fuel surcharge waiver and how does it work?
Petrol pumps generally add a 1% surcharge when you pay by card. A surcharge waiver refunds that 1%, but only on transactions within a set range and up to a monthly or per-cycle limit. Examples as of September 2026:
- Axis ACE: 1% waiver on ₹400 to ₹4,000, up to ₹500 per cycle
- HDFC Millennia: 1% waiver on ₹400 to ₹5,000, up to ₹250 per cycle
- Cashback SBI Card: 1% waiver on ₹500 to ₹3,000, up to ₹100 per statement
- Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent: 1% waiver at any pump on ₹400 to ₹4,000, up to ₹4,500 a year
A waiver only cancels a charge; it earns you nothing. Most general cards also exclude fuel from cashback and points, so a co-branded fuel card is the only way to earn meaningfully on petrol.
How much can a fuel credit card save? A worked example
Assume you spend ₹6,000 a month on fuel at one brand, in fill-ups under ₹4,000 each, and that you do not hit the fee waiver spend. Fees include 18% GST.
- BPCL SBI Card OCTANE: 25 points × 60 = 1,500 points = ₹375, plus the 1% waiver of ₹60, gives ₹435 a month or ₹5,220 a year. Minus the ₹1,769 fee: about ₹3,451.
- BPCL SBI Card: 13 points × 60 = 780 points = ₹195, plus ₹60, gives ₹255 a month or ₹3,060 a year. Minus ₹589: about ₹2,471.
- HPCL Super Saver ICICI: 4% of ₹6,000 is ₹240, capped at ₹200, plus ₹60, gives ₹260 a month or ₹3,120 a year. Minus ₹590: about ₹2,530, before any HP Pay bonus.
- IndianOil HDFC (after the first six months): 150 points × ₹0.96 = ₹144, plus the ₹60 waiver, gives ₹204 a month or ₹2,448 a year. Minus ₹590: about ₹1,858.
At ₹6,000 a month, OCTANE leads, and the IndianOil HDFC card is held back by its cap. At ₹2,000 a month, the ranking narrows sharply, and a general cashback card you already hold may be the simpler choice.
Fuel card traps: caps, UPI and the new 1% fees
- Caps on eligible spend. Both BPCL SBI cards reward fuel spend of up to ₹10,000 a month; above that you earn nothing extra.
- UPI payments. SBI Card says the OCTANE surcharge waiver does not apply to fuel paid through UPI on RuPay. Pay by tapping or inserting the card if you want the waiver.
- Fees on heavy fuel spend. HDFC charges 1% on fuel spends above ₹15,000 on consumer cards from July 2025. Axis charges 1% on the whole fuel amount once fuel spends in a cycle reach ₹50,000, from December 2024. IDFC FIRST charges 1% on its WOW card when fuel exceeds ₹30,000 in a cycle.
- Low-value redemptions. IndianOil HDFC points lose most of their value as cashback. Redeem for fuel.
How to choose a fuel credit card
- Check which brand you use most over two or three months of statements.
- Work out your monthly fuel spend and compare it with each card's cap.
- Subtract the fee with GST, unless your total card spend clears the waiver.
- Check the other categories. OCTANE's dining and grocery points or HPCL Super Saver's utility points can matter as much as fuel.
- Keep a general card for everything else. See our ranking of the best cashback credit cards in India and the cash back rankings for India.
Frequently asked questions
Which credit card is best for petrol in India?
It depends on the pump brand. As of September 2026, the BPCL SBI Card OCTANE gives 7.25% value back at BPCL, the HPCL Super Saver ICICI gives 4% cashback plus a 1% surcharge waiver at HPCL, and the IndianOil HDFC card gives 5% as fuel points at IndianOil. Each has a monthly cap, so match it to your fuel bill.
What is a fuel surcharge waiver on a credit card?
Pumps usually add a 1% surcharge on card payments. A waiver refunds it, but only on transactions within a range, such as ₹400 to ₹4,000, and up to a monthly or per-cycle cap, such as ₹250. It cancels a cost rather than earning a reward, so on its own it is worth little compared with a co-branded fuel card.
Is the BPCL SBI Card OCTANE worth ₹1,499 a year?
Yes, if you spend more than about ₹3,300 a month at BPCL. OCTANE earns 3% more than the basic BPCL SBI Card on fuel, and the fee difference is about ₹1,180 a year with GST, so ₹39,333 of annual BPCL fuel is the break-even point. Its fee is waived if you spend ₹2 lakh a year on the card.
Do I get fuel rewards when I pay by UPI?
Often not in full. SBI Card says the OCTANE surcharge waiver does not apply to fuel paid by UPI on RuPay. Rules vary by card, so check the terms. Paying with the physical card or a tap-to-pay card on your phone is the safest way to earn fuel points and the surcharge waiver.
Which fuel credit card has the lowest fee?
The BPCL SBI Card, HPCL Super Saver ICICI and IndianOil HDFC card all cost around ₹500 plus GST a year. The IndianOil HDFC card has the easiest waiver, at ₹50,000 of annual spend. From May 2026 the BPCL SBI Card needs ₹1 lakh, and the HPCL Super Saver needs ₹1.5 lakh.
