You can get a credit card in the UAE without moving your salary. HSBC says you do not need an HSBC account for its Live+ and Cash+ cards, Liv accepts applicants without a Liv account, and RAKBANK's Red card eligibility lists a salary and a security cheque rather than a salary transfer. Expect closer checks on your income.

This guide is based on bank key facts statements, product pages and the Central Bank of the UAE rulebook, checked in September 2026. Bank policies change, and approval always depends on your own profile, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the bank. For our overall ranking, see the best credit cards in the UAE.

Why do UAE banks ask for a salary transfer?

A salary transfer lets the bank see your income arrive every month and gives it a clear source of repayment. Card agreements often also let the bank use money in your other accounts with it against what you owe. Liv's key facts statement, for example, warns that other accounts you hold with the bank may be used to set off amounts owed on your credit card.

When your salary goes elsewhere, the bank has to rely on documents instead: a salary certificate, bank statements from the bank that receives your salary, and your AECB credit report. That is why applications without a salary transfer can take longer and sometimes come with a lower limit.

Which UAE banks issue credit cards without a salary transfer?

Based on what the banks publish, these are the clearest options as of September 2026:

  • HSBC. HSBC's key facts statement says, for each of its Skywards, Cash+ and Live+ cards, that you do not need to open a bank account. The HSBC Live+ product page lists a salary of AED 5,000 for employees of companies on HSBC's approved list and AED 12,500 for others, while the key facts statement lists AED 10,000, so confirm which applies to you. HSBC Cash+ needs AED 30,000.
  • Liv. Liv's credit card terms say that both existing customers and new customers without a Liv primary account can apply for the Liv Cashback or Liv Cashback+ card. The minimum salary is AED 5,000 for Cashback and AED 15,000 for Cashback+, with a debt burden below 50% and a good AECB score.
  • RAKBANK. The Red card key facts statement lists a monthly salary of AED 5,000 and a security cheque matching the credit limit. It does not list a salary transfer.
  • ADCB. The ADCB 365 Cashback application form asks whether your salary is transferred to ADCB and offers both answers. The card needs a salary of AED 5,000 or eligibility for a limit of at least AED 3,000.
  • CBD. CBD's key facts statement says employed or self-employed applicants can qualify by meeting the minimum salary or by holding an active fixed deposit of a minimum value set by the bank.

A published policy is not a guarantee of approval. The bank still checks your income, your existing debts and your AECB record.

Does a salary transfer change the rate you pay?

At some banks it has. ADIB's schedule of charges shows that on several older covered cards the monthly profit rate was 2.99% with a salary transfer and 3.09% without. For new covered cards issued from 15 February 2024 onwards, ADIB lists a single monthly profit rate of 3.75%, and its key facts statement shows 3.75% (45.63% APR) for the ADIB Cashback Visa. Other banks set rates by card type rather than by salary transfer: Emirates NBD lists 3.25% or 3.69% a month depending on the card, and says a 3.25% rate applies to all UAE nationals.

The rate only matters if you carry a balance. If you pay the full statement every month, you pay no interest or profit on purchases on the cards covered here, whether or not your salary is transferred.

Step by step: applying without a salary transfer

  1. Check your AECB credit report first, so you know what the bank will see.
  2. Get a recent salary certificate from your employer; some banks want one no older than a month.
  3. Download three to six months of statements from the bank that receives your salary.
  4. Choose a card whose published eligibility does not require a salary transfer, such as HSBC Live+, Liv Cashback or RAKBANK Red.
  5. Make sure your existing loan and card repayments stay under 50% of your salary, including the new card.
  6. Apply to one bank at a time and wait for a decision before trying another.

How do banks check your income without a salary transfer?

They use documents and your credit record instead of watching your salary arrive. CBD's key facts statement says the bank may retrieve and review your credit report, bank statements and other documents to work out your income and set a suitable limit. Emirates NBD's Duo card page asks for a salary certificate no more than a month old, plus a payslip if your salary varies by more than 10%. Your AECB report also shows the bank every loan and card you already hold, which feeds into the 50% debt burden check.

The practical upshot is that your paperwork has to match. If the salary on your certificate, your bank statements and your application form differ, expect delays or a request for more documents. If you have just changed jobs, ask the bank in advance what proof of your new salary it accepts.

Can you get a credit card against a fixed deposit?

Yes, and it is the usual route if your income is below the Central Bank's threshold or hard to document. The Central Bank rule allows banks to issue a card against a pledged deposit of at least AED 60,000, and its guidance adds that the combined limit on the card and any other credit given against that deposit should not exceed 50% of the deposit. CBD's key facts statement confirms that holders of an active fixed deposit of a minimum value set by the bank can apply for its cards.

Because the deposit is pledged to the bank, plan on that money staying tied up for as long as the card is open. Ask the bank how and when the pledge is released if you later close the card.

What if your salary is under AED 5,000 or you are self-employed?

The Central Bank's rule sets the floor: annual income of at least AED 60,000, which is AED 5,000 a month, or the pledged deposit described above. Its guidance also says banks may encourage debit cards for customers who are not eligible for a credit card.

Self-employed applicants face bank-specific tests. RAKBANK's Red card, for example, accepts self-employed applicants with an average quarterly account balance of AED 75,000 or a quarterly credit turnover of AED 150,000. CBD asks self-employed applicants for a valid trade licence alongside identity documents.

Risks to understand before you apply

  • Security cheques. A cheque matching your limit gives the bank a way to recover money if you stop paying. Only sign one for a limit you can manage.
  • Set-off rights. If you later open an account with the card issuer, the bank may be able to use that balance against what you owe.
  • Lower limits. Without a salary transfer, a bank may approve a smaller limit, which also lowers cashback caps on cards like Liv's that tie the cap to your limit.
  • Debt burden. Every new limit counts towards the 50% debt burden ratio, which can affect a future car loan or mortgage.

The bottom line

You do not need to move your salary to get a good UAE credit card. HSBC Live+ is the strongest option if your employer is on HSBC's list, Liv Cashback is the easiest free-for-life route, and RAKBANK Red works if you are comfortable providing a security cheque. Frequently asked questions

Can I get a credit card in the UAE without salary transfer?

Yes. HSBC says you do not need an HSBC account for its Live+ and Cash+ cards, Liv accepts applicants without a Liv primary account, and RAKBANK's Red card eligibility lists a salary and security cheque but no salary transfer. Approval still depends on your income and credit record.

What documents do I need if my salary is paid to another bank?

Usually a recent salary certificate, recent statements from the bank that receives your salary, your Emirates ID, passport and residence visa. Some banks, such as RAKBANK for its Red card, also ask for a security cheque.

Is the interest or profit rate higher without salary transfer?

At some banks it has been. ADIB's schedule shows older covered cards at 2.99% a month with salary transfer and 3.09% without. New ADIB covered cards issued from 15 February 2024 carry a single 3.75% monthly profit rate.

Can I get a credit card in the UAE with a salary below AED 5,000?

The Central Bank rule requires annual income of at least AED 60,000, which is AED 5,000 a month, or a pledged deposit of at least AED 60,000. Below that level, a card secured against a deposit is the usual route.

Can self-employed people get a credit card without salary transfer?

Yes, if they meet the bank's tests. RAKBANK's Red card accepts an average quarterly balance of AED 75,000 or quarterly credit turnover of AED 150,000, and CBD asks for a valid trade licence.
