The best travel credit card in the UAE is the one that keeps your foreign transaction costs down and rewards the airline you actually fly. If you fly Etihad, the FAB Etihad Guest Platinum is FAB's entry-level Etihad Guest card at AED 525 a year. If you prefer lounges and cashback, HSBC Live+ or Liv Cashback+ fit better.

Every figure in this guide comes from the banks' own product pages, key facts statements and fee schedules, checked in September 2026. UAE card terms change often, so confirm the current numbers with the bank before you apply. For the full ranking of UAE cards, see our best credit cards in the UAE page.

What makes a credit card good for travel in the UAE?

Three things decide whether a card works for travel: what you pay on every foreign transaction, what you earn on that spend, and what the card gives you at the airport and during the trip. Miles and lounges get the marketing attention, but the foreign transaction fee is the cost you pay on every swipe abroad and on many foreign websites, whether you notice it or not.

UAE banks usually charge their own foreign transaction fee on top of a processing fee from Visa or Mastercard. Emirates NBD's fee schedule, for example, lists a 1.99% international transaction fee and notes that it is charged in addition to a standard scheme processing fee of about 1.15%. So the real cost of a foreign purchase on many UAE cards is above 3% before you earn anything back.

Paying in dirhams abroad does not avoid the fee. HSBC charges 1% (1.05% with VAT) on international transactions billed in AED. ADIB charges a 2.75% service fee on AED-billed international transactions processed from 10 September 2026. DIB lists 3.14%. When a shop, hotel or website offers to charge you in AED, you usually get the merchant's exchange rate and still pay a bank fee, so choose the local currency instead.

Which UAE credit cards charge the lowest foreign transaction fees?

The table below shows the bank fee each card charges on spend in a foreign currency, as published in September 2026. The extra charges column matters because two cards with the same headline fee can cost different amounts once the scheme fee and VAT are added.

CardBank fee on non-AED spendWhat is added on top
Liv Cashback and Liv Cashback+1.99%Mastercard processing fee of about 1.15%
Emirates NBD cards, such as the Skywards Signature1.99%Scheme processing fee of about 1.15% (waived on dnata World cards)
HSBC Live+ and HSBC Cash+2% (2.1% with VAT)Scheme fee of up to 1.21% including VAT
ADIB Cashback Visa2.3% service feeVisa's fee; VAT on top
RAKBANK Red2.57% (with VAT)Scheme processing fee
FAB Etihad Guest PlatinumUp to 2.61%VAT and scheme charges
CBD Super Saver3.5%Visa processing fee
DIB Consumer Cashback3.70%3.14% also applies to AED-billed international spend

None of the cards in the table is free to use abroad. FAB's fee schedule does list a 0% international transaction fee on its FAB Travel card and on FAB Z, with only scheme charges applying, so if you spend heavily in foreign currencies it is worth checking those two cards directly with FAB.

A quick way to compare: on AED 10,000 of foreign spend a year, a 1.99% bank fee costs about AED 199 before the scheme fee, while a 3.70% fee costs about AED 370. That gap is larger than the annual fee on several cards in this guide.

What is the best UAE credit card for Etihad flyers?

The FAB Etihad Guest Platinum is FAB's entry-level Etihad Guest card. It costs AED 525 a year including VAT and needs a minimum monthly salary of AED 8,000. FAB's product page lists 2 Etihad Guest Miles for every AED 10 spent on domestic transactions, 3.5 miles on non-AED international transactions and 4 miles for every AED 10 spent with Etihad or its partners.

There is also an optional Miles Accelerator. For AED 250 a month you earn 5.5 miles per AED 10 on all purchases. A simple way to decide whether it pays: on AED 8,000 of domestic spend in a month, the standard rate earns 1,600 miles and the accelerator earns 4,400. You pay AED 250 for 2,800 extra miles, which works out to about 8.9 fils per extra mile. Only switch it on in months where you value an Etihad Guest mile above that.

Two points to weigh before you apply. FAB's product page does not list airport lounge access for this card, and FAB's published finance charge is 3.99% a month (47.88% a year), so this is a card to pay in full every month. FAB's fee schedule lists the Etihad Guest Signature at AED 1,575 and the Etihad Guest Infinite at AED 2,625 a year, including VAT, if you want a higher tier.

What is the best UAE credit card for Emirates Skywards miles?

If you mostly fly Emirates, a Skywards co-brand card usually makes more sense than an Etihad one. Emirates NBD's Skywards Signature is the best-known option; check its current earn rate and fee on our card page. HSBC's key facts statement lists two Skywards cards: the Emirates Skywards Signature at AED 1,050 a year including VAT, needing a monthly salary of AED 10,000 and earning up to 1.75 miles per USD 1 of eligible spend, and the Emirates Skywards Infinite at AED 2,625, needing AED 30,000 and earning up to 2.75 miles per USD 1.

If you want an Islamic option, ADIB's covered card key facts statement lists an Emirates Skywards Signature covered card at AED 1,500 a year plus VAT.

A third route is a cashback card that converts to miles. Liv lets you redeem points from both of its cards as cashback or Emirates Skywards Miles: up to 5,000 miles a month on Liv Cashback and up to 10,000 on Liv Cashback+. That keeps your options open if you are not sure you will fly Emirates often enough to use the miles.

Which UAE travel cards include airport lounge access?

Lounge access varies more than most people expect, both in how many visits you get and in the conditions attached. As of September 2026:

  • HSBC Live+: 12 complimentary visits a year for you and supplementary cardholders at more than 1,200 lounges, provided you make an international purchase of at least USD 1 within the 15 days before you travel.
  • HSBC Cash+: access for you and one guest at more than 1,000 lounges, with the same USD 1 international purchase rule.
  • CBD Super Saver: 8 complimentary visits a year at more than 1,000 lounges through the Visa Airport Companion app.
  • Liv Cashback+: lounge access at more than 800 airports; Liv Cashback covers more than 25 airports.
  • FAB Etihad Guest Platinum: no lounge access listed on the product page.

For a wider comparison that includes premium cards such as the ADCB TouchPoints Infinite and Mashreq Solitaire, read our UAE lounge access guide.

Should you choose miles or cashback for travel?

Miles make sense when you fly one airline often enough to redeem them and you are happy to plan around award seat availability. Cashback makes sense when you fly several airlines, travel on low-cost carriers, or simply want a predictable return. Cashback also has no expiry risk tied to an airline programme, although it can still expire under the card's own rules: CBD says Super Saver cashback lapses after 24 months and RAKBANK says Red cashback lapses after 15 months.

A flat cashback card with a low foreign fee can beat a miles card for someone who travels two or three times a year. A miles card pays off for people who put large, regular spend on the card and redeem for flights they would have paid for anyway. Be honest about which group you are in before paying an annual fee for miles.

How to choose a travel credit card in five steps

  1. Add up roughly how much you spend in foreign currencies each year, including foreign websites and subscriptions.
  2. Multiply that by each card's foreign transaction fee plus the scheme fee to see what the card costs you abroad.
  3. Decide whether you want Etihad Guest Miles, Emirates Skywards Miles or cashback, based on how you actually fly.
  4. Check the lounge rules, including visit limits, guest access and any spend condition before travel.
  5. Confirm the minimum salary and annual fee, and only then compare the earn rates.

What travel insurance do UAE credit cards include?

Several cards in this guide include travel cover. HSBC Live+ and HSBC Cash+ list multi-trip travel insurance of up to USD 500,000. CBD Super Saver lists multi-trip travel insurance for the cardholder and family for trips of up to 90 days, up to USD 500,000. Liv Cashback+ lists travel medical insurance of up to USD 500,000, and DIB's Consumer Cashback card lists travel insurance of up to USD 100,000.

Card insurance comes with its own terms, exclusions and claim rules. Read the policy document from the bank before you rely on it, and check whether the cover requires you to pay for the trip with the card.

The bottom line

For most UAE residents the travel card decision comes down to the foreign fee first and rewards second. Etihad flyers on a salary of AED 8,000 or more can start with the FAB Etihad Guest Platinum. Emirates flyers should compare the Skywards cards from Emirates NBD and HSBC. If you want lounges and flexibility without committing to one airline, HSBC Live+ is the lower-fee choice and Liv Cashback+ suits bigger monthly spenders who also want a 1.99% foreign fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best credit card for travel in the UAE?

It depends on how you fly. As of September 2026, the FAB Etihad Guest Platinum (AED 525 a year, AED 8,000 salary) suits Etihad flyers, HSBC's Skywards cards suit Emirates flyers, and HSBC Live+ or Liv Cashback+ suit people who want lounge access and cashback rather than airline miles.

Which UAE credit card has no foreign transaction fee?

Most UAE cards charge one. FAB's fee schedule lists a 0% international transaction fee on its FAB Travel card and FAB Z card, with only scheme charges applying. The cards in this guide charge between 1.99% and 3.70% on foreign currency spend, usually plus a Visa or Mastercard processing fee.

Is it cheaper to pay in AED when I use my card abroad?

Usually not. Many UAE banks charge a fee on international transactions billed in AED as well. HSBC charges 1% (1.05% with VAT), ADIB 2.75% from 10 September 2026 and DIB 3.14%. You also get the merchant's exchange rate, so choosing the local currency is normally cheaper.

What salary do I need for a travel credit card in the UAE?

As of September 2026, the FAB Etihad Guest Platinum needs AED 8,000 a month, HSBC's Emirates Skywards Signature needs AED 10,000, Liv Cashback+ needs AED 15,000 and HSBC Cash+ needs AED 30,000. HSBC Live+ starts at AED 5,000 for employees of approved companies.

Do UAE travel credit cards include free lounge access?

Some do, with conditions. HSBC Live+ includes 12 visits a year and CBD Super Saver 8 visits a year. HSBC's cards require an international purchase of at least USD 1 in the 15 days before you travel. The FAB Etihad Guest Platinum product page lists no lounge access.

Are Etihad Guest miles or Emirates Skywards miles better?

Neither is better in general. Choose the programme of the airline you fly most, because miles are only worth something if you redeem them. If you are unsure, Liv lets you redeem points as cashback or Skywards Miles, which keeps your options open.
