Only a handful of UAE credit cards are free for life. As of September 2026, RAKBANK Red and Liv Cashback charge no annual fee in any year, and both accept a monthly salary of AED 5,000. Most other cards sold as fee-free are free only in year one, then charge between AED 210 and AED 1,050 a year.
The figures below come from each bank's product page, key facts statement or fee schedule, checked in September 2026. Fees in the UAE usually include 5% VAT, and we say so where a bank quotes a fee before VAT. For our overall ranking, see the best credit cards in the UAE.
Which credit cards in the UAE are free for life?
Two mainstream cards in our database are free in every year, not just the first.
RAKBANK Red Credit Card
RAKBANK's key facts statement describes the Red card as a lifetime free card. It pays up to 1.5% cashback on retail spend, both in the UAE and abroad, subject to a minimum spend in each statement cycle. Cashback is capped at AED 300 per statement cycle, and several categories earn only 0.25%: charities, government services, bill payments, schools and education, transit and transport, telecoms, real estate and petrol stations.
You need a monthly salary of at least AED 5,000 and must give RAKBANK a security cheque matching your credit limit. The card also includes one free international remittance a month. RAKBANK's monthly interest rate is 3.65% (43.8% a year) if you carry a balance.
Liv Cashback Credit Card
The Liv Cashback card from Emirates NBD's digital bank has no joining fee and no annual fee. It pays a rate on all your spend that depends on your monthly total: 0.75% up to AED 4,999, 1.5% from AED 5,000 to AED 9,999 and 2% from AED 10,000. Once you move into a higher tier, the new rate applies to the whole month's spend. Government, utility and bill payments earn 0.1%.
Cashback is capped at AED 750 a month, and Liv also limits monthly cashback to a share of your credit limit. Its own example: on an AED 20,000 limit, the Cashback card can earn at most AED 400 in a month. You need a salary of AED 5,000, and the monthly interest rate is 3.49% (41.88% APR).
What is the difference between free for life and first year free?
A free-for-life card never charges a primary card fee as long as the product terms stay the same. A first-year-free card charges its full fee from the start of year two, and many banks bill it automatically on the card anniversary. CBD's key facts statement, for example, says the Super Saver is free for the first year only and that the fee applies from the beginning of the second year.
Timing matters because a billed fee is hard to recover. Emirates NBD's fee schedule says an annual fee that has been billed will not be reversed if the card is activated, used or cancelled, and Liv's key facts statement says the same about its joining fee. If you plan to cancel a first-year-free card, do it before the renewal date.
UAE credit cards with no annual fee compared
| Card | Year one | From year two | Published waiver | Minimum salary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RAKBANK Red | Free | Free | Not needed | AED 5,000 |
| Liv Cashback | Free | Free | Not needed | AED 5,000 |
| DIB Consumer Cashback | Free (current offer) | AED 210 | None published | AED 5,000 |
| HSBC Live+ | Free | AED 313.95 | Spend AED 12,000 a year | AED 5,000 or AED 12,500 |
| ADCB 365 Cashback | Free | AED 383.25 | None published | AED 5,000 |
| CBD Super Saver | Free | AED 420 | Annual spend target set by CBD | AED 5,000 |
| HSBC Cash+ | Free for 12 months | AED 1,050 | Spend AED 24,000 a year | AED 30,000 |
| ADIB Cashback Visa | AED 99 + VAT | AED 99 + VAT | None published | Not published |
Fees in the table include VAT except ADIB's, which the bank quotes before 5% VAT. HSBC's product page lists a salary of AED 5,000 for employees of companies on its approved list and AED 12,500 for everyone else, while its key facts statement lists AED 10,000, so ask HSBC which applies to you.
Is a free credit card worse than one with a fee?
Not always, but at higher spend a fee card often earns more. Take an illustration: someone putting AED 5,000 a month on one card, split into AED 1,500 of dining, AED 1,000 of groceries, AED 800 of fuel and AED 1,700 of other local shopping.
- ADCB 365 Cashback: 6% on dining (AED 90), 3% on groceries (AED 30), 5% on fuel (AED 40) and 1% on the rest (AED 17) comes to AED 177 a month, or AED 2,124 a year. After the AED 383.25 fee from year two, that leaves about AED 1,741.
- HSBC Live+: 6% on dining (AED 90), 5% on fuel (AED 40), 2% on groceries (AED 20) and 0.5% on the rest (AED 8.50) comes to AED 158.50 a month, or AED 1,902 a year. At AED 60,000 a year of spend the fee waiver is easily met, so the card costs nothing.
- Liv Cashback: AED 5,000 of spend lands in the 1.5% tier, so AED 75 a month, or AED 900 a year, with no fee.
- RAKBANK Red: up to 1.5% on AED 4,200 of non-fuel spend (AED 63) and 0.25% on fuel (AED 2) comes to about AED 65 a month, if the minimum spend is met.
The picture flips at lower spend. The ADCB 365 pays no cashback in a month below AED 5,000, and HSBC's bonus rates need AED 3,000. If your spend is under AED 3,000 a month or varies a lot, a free-for-life card with a flat rate is usually the safer choice. This is an illustration only; it assumes every purchase qualifies and ignores category exclusions.
How do you avoid paying an annual fee in the UAE?
- Read the key facts statement to see whether the card is free for life or free only in year one.
- Note your card anniversary, because first-year-free cards bill the fee at the start of year two.
- Track any published waiver target, such as HSBC Live+'s AED 12,000 or HSBC Cash+'s AED 24,000 a year.
- Decide before the fee is billed; some banks say a billed fee will not be reversed once the card is used or cancelled.
- Ask the bank for a waiver if you do not meet the target, but expect that it may say no.
- If the fee is not worth it, apply for a free-for-life card before the renewal date rather than after.
What can a free credit card still charge you?
No annual fee does not mean no cost. The main charges to watch on the two free-for-life cards, as of September 2026:
- Interest: 3.65% a month on RAKBANK Red and 3.49% a month on Liv Cashback if you do not pay the full balance.
- Late payment: AED 241.50 each time on RAKBANK Red; AED 183.75 a month on Liv if the minimum payment is missed.
- Over limit: AED 299.25 on RAKBANK Red and AED 292.95 a month on Liv.
- Foreign spend: 2.57% on RAKBANK Red and 1.99% plus about 1.15% scheme fee on Liv.
- Cash advances: 3.31% or AED 105, whichever is higher, on RAKBANK Red; 3% or AED 103.95 on Liv.
One detail on RAKBANK Red's free monthly remittance: RAKBANK's service and price guide says international remittances are treated as cash advance transactions, so check whether cash advance interest applies before you use it.
Does a no annual fee card affect your credit score?
The fee itself makes no difference to your score, but the application and how you use the card do. ADCB's consumer guide explains that a lender's check when you apply is a hard inquiry, which can have a minor effect, and that several recent applications make lenders nervous. Opening a free card only to chase a small welcome offer, then applying for another a few weeks later, can cost you more than the offer is worth.
Keeping a free card open can help. ADCB notes that closing old accounts can shorten your credit history and push up your credit utilisation, both of which may weigh on your score. A free-for-life card with a modest limit, used lightly and paid in full, is one of the cheapest ways to keep a long, clean record at the Al Etihad Credit Bureau. Our AECB credit score guide explains how the score is built.
Which free card should you pick?
- Pick Liv Cashback if you are comfortable banking in an app, spend AED 5,000 or more a month across many categories and want a low 1.99% foreign fee.
- Pick RAKBANK Red if you want a traditional bank, spend mostly on shopping rather than fuel or bills, and are happy to provide a security cheque.
- Pick HSBC Live+ if you spend at least AED 1,000 a month and want category cashback and lounges; the fee waiver makes it effectively free.
We also cover the Mashreq Cashback and FAB Cashback cards, which are often marketed as fee-free; check their current fee terms on our card pages before you apply. If your salary is around AED 5,000, our guide to the best cards for an AED 5,000 salary goes further.
Frequently asked questions
Which credit cards are free for life in the UAE?
As of September 2026, RAKBANK Red and Liv Cashback charge no annual fee in any year. Both need a monthly salary of AED 5,000. Many other cards are free only in the first year and then charge a fee, sometimes with a spend-based waiver.
Will the bank refund my annual fee if I cancel the card?
Often not. Emirates NBD's fee schedule says a billed annual fee will not be reversed if the card is activated, used or cancelled, and Liv says the same about its joining fee. Cancel before the renewal date if you do not want to pay.
How do I get my credit card annual fee waived?
Meet the published spend target if the card has one. HSBC waives the Live+ fee at AED 12,000 of spend a year and the Cash+ fee at AED 24,000. If there is no published waiver, you can ask the bank, but it has no obligation to agree.

Is there an Islamic credit card with no annual fee?
Not among the cards we checked. DIB's Consumer Cashback covered card is free in year one under a current offer, then AED 210 a year, and ADIB's Cashback Visa covered card costs AED 99 plus VAT. See our Islamic cards guide for more options.
