With excellent credit, approval is no longer the constraint — issuers compete for you. That makes this the one ranking where premium cards earn their place: the largest welcome bonuses, the highest credit lines and the best approval odds for cards like the Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum and Venture X all sit in this tier. We still rank on net value, so several $95 cards outrank $695 ones.
Welcome bonuses worth $750–$1,500 in points are the single biggest source of value at this tier. Sequence applications — Chase first for 5/24, then Amex (once-per-lifetime bonuses, so choose carefully), then Capital One and Citi — and never rush: spacing applications three months apart keeps approval odds high.
If you fly four or more times a year and will use lounges, hotel and airline credits, a premium card's net value exceeds the mid-tier. If not, the Sapphire Preferred, Venture and Amex Gold still return more per dollar of fee.
Excellent credit in the UK opens the Amex Platinum and HSBC Premier World Elite; in Canada the Amex Platinum and Aeroplan Reserve; in India super-premium invitation cards like HDFC Infinia and Axis Magnus; in the UAE Infinite-tier cards with unlimited lounge access. Each market ranking lists them.
For frequent travellers the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum or Capital One Venture X; for everyone else the Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold still returns the most per dollar of fee. Use the ranking above, which orders on net value.
No. Issuers also check income, recent applications (Chase 5/24), existing relationships and utilisation. A 750 score with six new cards in a year can still be declined.
Typically $10,000–$30,000 on premium cards, depending on income and existing credit lines. Higher limits lower utilisation and help the score further.
A plain-English breakdown of the four things every credit card issuer checks: income, credit score, age and residency, plus how to qualify.
Secured, fair, good or excellent? Here's the credit score you actually need for each tier of credit card and how to pick the right one.
Proof of income, a valid ID and proof of address, here's exactly what you may need to apply for a credit card and breeze through verification.
No credit history? Here's how students and first-time applicants can qualify for their first credit card and start building a strong score.
How much income do you really need for a credit card, what counts as income, and how issuers verify it. The full picture explained.
The single card we would tell a first-timer to get in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, India, Brazil and Germany — and the three habits that matter more than the card.
